Grand Theft Auto VI is Rockstar Games' next major entry in the Grand Theft Auto series and one of the most anticipated games in the world.
GTA VI: EVERYTHING WE KNOW
Set in the fictional state of Leonida, GTA VI returns players to Vice City while expanding the setting far beyond the city itself. The story follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos as their lives become increasingly connected to Leonida's criminal underworld.
Since the first trailer arrived in December 2023, Rockstar has gradually revealed more about the game through trailers, character profiles, screenshots, gameplay footage, pre-order information and its official GTA VI website.
Here is everything Rockstar has officially confirmed so far.
RELEASE DATE
Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled to launch on 19 November 2026.
The game will release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Rockstar announced the current date on 6 November 2025, replacing the previously announced 26 May 2026 release date.
The additional development time is intended to give Rockstar more time to finish and polish the game before launch.
There is currently no officially announced PC release date.
THE SETTING: LEONIDA
GTA VI takes place in Leonida, a fictional state inspired heavily by the US state of Florida.
Vice City is the centrepiece of the setting, but it is only one part of the overall world.
Rockstar has shown beaches, highways, rural areas, waterways, smaller communities and the Leonida Keys throughout its official promotional material.
This gives GTA VI a considerably broader setting than simply recreating the city from the original Vice City.
VICE CITY
Vice City returns as the heart of GTA VI.
Rockstar has rebuilt the city for a modern-day setting, with busy streets, beaches, nightlife, high-rise buildings, residential areas and a wide range of businesses and social environments.
The modern Vice City is inspired by Miami while remaining a fictional Grand Theft Auto location.
The city is also surrounded by the wider Leonida region, allowing the game to move between dense urban areas and much more rural environments.
JASON DUVAL
Jason Duval is one of GTA VI's two protagonists.
Rockstar's official character material explains that Jason grew up around criminals and grifters before serving in the Army.
After leaving the military, Jason became involved with local drug runners in the Leonida Keys.
He wants a more straightforward life, but his circumstances continue to pull him back towards crime.
His relationship with Lucia becomes increasingly important as the story develops.
LUCIA CAMINOS
Lucia Caminos is GTA VI's second protagonist.
She is the first female protagonist of a mainline Grand Theft Auto game.
Rockstar has revealed that Lucia spent time in the Leonida Penitentiary after becoming involved in a criminal situation.
After her release, she wants to build a better life for herself.
Jason becomes an important part of that plan, with the two characters forming the central partnership of GTA VI's story.
JASON AND LUCIA
Jason and Lucia's relationship is one of the defining elements of GTA VI.
Rockstar's official story description explains that an easy score goes wrong, leaving the pair caught in a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida.
The trailers show them travelling together, committing crimes, spending time around Vice City and dealing with the consequences of their actions.
Their relationship is not simply a partnership between two criminals. It appears to be central to the emotional side of the story as well as the criminal storyline.
THE STORY
Rockstar has deliberately kept many details of GTA VI's story secret.
What is confirmed is that Jason and Lucia become involved in a criminal conspiracy after an attempted score goes wrong.
Their situation brings them into contact with criminals, businesses and communities throughout Leonida.
The game's story therefore appears to extend well beyond Vice City itself.
Rockstar has also introduced a wider cast of characters connected to Jason and Lucia, helping establish a much larger criminal and social network across Leonida.
TRAILER 1
Rockstar released the first GTA VI trailer on 4 December 2023.
It introduced modern-day Vice City and officially revealed Lucia as one of the game's protagonists.
The trailer also established the tone of the game, showing beaches, nightlife, vehicles, wildlife, crowds and different parts of Leonida.
It immediately confirmed that GTA VI would be returning to the Vice City setting while taking the series into a much larger modern world.
TRAILER 2
Trailer 2 was released on 6 May 2025.
It provided a much deeper look at Jason, Lucia and the world around them.
The trailer showed more of Vice City and the wider Leonida region, while introducing or highlighting numerous characters and locations.
It also demonstrated the scale and density of the world, with detailed environments, busy roads, crowds, wildlife and a wide range of vehicles.
Trailer 2 became one of the biggest gaming trailer releases ever, generating more than 475 million views across platforms during its first 24 hours according to widely reported figures.
THE EXTENDED LOOK
On 27 August 2026, Rockstar released GTA VI: An Extended Look.
The presentation runs for more than 26 minutes and was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5.
It provides the clearest official demonstration yet of GTA VI's gameplay and world.
The footage shows Jason and Lucia travelling through Leonida, carrying out criminal activities, driving, using boats, swimming, fighting and interacting with the world around them.
It also provides another detailed look at Vice City, the Leonida Keys and the wider environments surrounding the city.
GAMEPLAY
Rockstar has shown a wide range of gameplay across its official GTA VI material.
Players will be able to drive, use boats, swim, fight, explore, interact with characters and take part in criminal activities.
The Extended Look demonstrated how these systems come together within the open world.
The footage also showed the density of Leonida, with traffic, crowds, wildlife, interiors and environmental details helping the world feel active beyond the player's immediate actions.
Rockstar has not yet revealed every gameplay system or activity, so further details may still be announced before launch.
THE OPEN WORLD
Leonida is designed to be much more than a backdrop for the story.
Rockstar's official footage has shown urban streets, beaches, waterways, rural areas, islands and smaller communities.
The different environments give the world a broad range of visual and gameplay experiences.
Vice City provides the dense urban centre, while areas such as the Leonida Keys offer a much different environment.
This variety is one of the major differences between GTA VI and previous entries set around Vice City.
VEHICLES
Vehicles remain a fundamental part of Grand Theft Auto.
Official GTA VI footage has shown cars, motorcycles, trucks, boats and aircraft.
The different environments of Leonida also create opportunities for different types of transportation.
High-performance cars are prominent around Vice City, while boats and other vehicles become more important around the Keys and coastal areas.
Rockstar has revealed vehicles through trailers, screenshots, the official GTA VI website and pre-order information.
CHARACTERS
Rockstar has introduced a growing cast of characters surrounding Jason and Lucia.
Among the officially revealed characters are Boobie Ike, Raul Bautista, Brian Heder and Cal Hampton.
These characters help establish the different criminal, business and social groups operating throughout Leonida.
Rockstar has not yet revealed the full cast or every role they will play in the story.
MUSIC AND RADIO
Music is another major part of GTA VI's world.
Rockstar has revealed six radio stations so far, covering genres including Latin music, country, African music, classic metal, pop and Southern hip-hop.
The game will also feature podcasts.
Rockstar has described GTA VI as having the biggest and widest-ranging selection of in-game radio and podcasts yet.
Rockstar has also announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, a 34-track collection of original music scheduled to release alongside the game on 19 November 2026.
